Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year
I have visited all the Science classrooms to introduce myself to all of the 6th graders. We had a GREAT time talking about what school counselors do and some of the topics I will work with them on in middle school. If you haven’t seen a blue flyer from me come home with your 6th grader, make sure to ask them for it! It has all of my contact information plus it talks about what school counselors do in middle school. I’m looking forward to working with you & your son or daughter this school year!

My Experience
This is my seventh year in the Frederick County School System. I was a middle school counselor in Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 10 years before moving to Winchester. I also have experience as a reading tutor, a volunteer with the Autism Society and a mentor for youth newly diagnosed with diabetes. My bachelor's degree is in Human Services Counseling with a double minor in Sociology and Psychology from Old Dominion University. I have my Master's in Education, specializing in School Counseling also from ODU.

My School Counseling Philosophy
A school counselor works with students individually, in small groups or in the classroom.  A school counselor DOES NOT do "therapy" but instead helps students develop coping skills and problem solving techniques to deal with daily frustrations and stressors. I am a strong supporter of the American School Counselors Association's National Model. The National Model focuses on three major components:
  • Personal/Social
  • Academic
  • Career
I believe that all children can learn but they all learn at different speeds and levels. As a school counselor, I help the student focus on their academics so they may feel success, no matter how small the steps may seem.
